EU proposes standard speed limit
#11
This will just be the thin end of the wedge - I read somewhere that there are plans to make laws to introduce GPS technology into new cars (and old cars retrospectively) by 2012 to enable "road use charging". Probably this will automatically fine you for speeding also, if the legislation doesn't go as far as to suggest taking over control of your car to prevent speeding (what's the betting on that?)!

How did they arrive at 62mph !!!!!
All cars are efficient at different speeds, so if they want to be really anal they'd have to set a different limit for all cars !
Stupid ridiculous idea.

Imagine if someone invented a car that was at it's most efficient at 100mph or 150 mph

Now you're talkin!
Of course the argument would then change to safety and not enviromental reasons, they're like frogs hopping from lillypad to lillypad as the debate suits them.
Speed will result in worse injuries in the event of an accident but if you take out the one common denominator in most cases it will be unapplicable...
BAD DRIVING!
That's what causes the accidents.... ermmm, am i straying a bit off topic here?

When I was in the UK a few weeks ago, I averaged 52mph on a run from Gloucester to Warrington. What's all the fuss about???
Going back quite a few years, it was the Germans and Americans who were pushing for catalytic converters to become standard on cars to clean up emissions. Of course, being such a 'blunt instrument' all that does is make cars more thirsty. At the time there was research going into lean burn engines etc as the alternative (British and smarter) way to cut down on emissions by the simple expedient of burning less fuel, but we all know which design solution won How about insisting on a maximum weight of cars (and their passengers) - just as valid to keep as this idea to keep the Green loonies happy.
Sometimes I am very glad I live somewhere both not in the EU and that doesn't (yet at any rate!) have a national speed limit

Fuel efficient engines produce less Carbon Dioxide but still need a Cat to get rid of some of the other byproducts.
Some people seem to think that a Cat makes a car environmentally clean. It does not.
