Thanks Brian - I think I might actually understand now!
(You must really despair of the amount of time and effort you spend typing technical stuff to educate the masses on here - only to get the same questions asked again and again. Suddenly the words "Do a search" take on a whole new dimension.......)

Personally I'm sure I can't tell the difference between Optimax and Ultimate, maybe more 'roar' with Ultimate, but that could be just me

.... and one of the RON numbers is wrong to boot.
Did you know that '95' normal unlead is often around 96 RON, but only 85 MON?
Also, that Shell warranty that when sold Optimax is at least 98 RON, but not that it's a precise figure?
BTW The Optimax RON number isn't the wrong one - it's 98 RON, but what fraction over varies slightly. You don't see other claims, of a fuel being 97.8 RON - but the pump numbers simply guarantee a minimum the fuel has to meet.
For the curious, I've seen one independant test on Optimax which rated the particular sample tested as 98.3 RON, 86.9 MON which are good numbers. But thinking of it as 98.6 RON isn't that useful a comparison. I wouldn't state that Optimax is always 98.3/86.9 - just that one sample tested as such.
