[QUOTE=UK Paul,Aug 8 2006, 08:08 AM] Was calculated about 3 years ago (when 80p a litre of fuel) that this would add 40p a litre.

But what really freaked the government was the initial 10,000+ thrown on the dole from the VED depts, then the knock on effect at DVLC offices & post offices etc, etc.

Could have left 20,000+ out of a job.....

(They could have all got jobs at the local Shells mind to guard the now Gold Bullion that would be petrol at

A middle-class revolution? Forget it. The establishment has succeeded in making most believe it is better to gawp at shit like 'Big Brother' or 'Tricia', rather than to think about things or to find out stuff.
And of course, to believe that they are acting in our best interests, and that taxing us in the many different forms they do is 'unavoidable' since we are the cause of the problem they're trying to solve.

'The Environment' is a case in point, we're all made to feel guilty, and that it's our fault for exploiting technological advances to allow us to use personal transport, and frequent air travel. Then what? They take money from us, to assuage our guilt. It would be laughable if it weren't happening right here, and so many people weren't falling for it......

The drivers we really need off the roads are the ones who live in cities but won't use public transport, even though it is available. Fuel tax will never get these people off the roads as they use very little fuel doing their 5 mile/1hour a day commute.

I think we should go down the route of congestion charging, as long as it really is congestion charging. Before all the hype about global warming, people were much more worried about local pollution in towns and cities, and charging all those people that sit in traffic jams every day would make a big difference.

I see in the paper at the weekend (though not widely reported) that the Govt. has quietly shelved it's plans for a national school bus scheme.

Despite it having a marked effect on traffic in the areas it was trialled, and cutting congestion more than the congestion charge ever has in London.

So they complain we use our cars too much, and plan to tax people driving to work who find it unavoidable, yet a scheme that cuts urban congestion more effectively than any taxation, is dropped.

Can't be that it costs, rather than makes money for the govt. surely?
