Default Engine running rich - ECU Reader needed Cambridge

Hi all,

Had a bad last couple of days.. My 2000 plate S is my daily runner coving around 20miles a day with 83K on the clock.

A couple of days ago I started to notice some occasional whiteish coloured smoke from the exhaust.. it wasn't under Vtec or acceleration, more when decelerating or braking that I'd see it or smell it (quite sweet smelling). Anyways I did some research and sounded like I was burning engine coolant which tied up with the fluid levels.

I was planing to do some tests on the engine this weekend to find the cause of the leak, head gasket, oil cooler, etc but on the way home from work yesterday the I foolishly forgot my car was injured and engaged Vtec in 3rd.. Hmm it got to 7000rpm then rattle, thud, vibrate! I limped it off the motorway and into my village to find the engine management light flashing like a Christmas tree and the whole car sounding like a muscle car / boxer engine..!

I can only assume that one of the cylinders is no longer firing and after doing some reading suspect its a coil pack or badly gapped spark plug.

Has anyone got any coil packs spare? I really want to get her fixed this weekend as I have loads of meetings next week and don't want to be on the train up and down the country!

I'm in Cambridgeshire but will come anywhere in East Anglia to collect if you have one.!

Thanks and suggestions on the above are welcome (other than don't rag your car when it's obviously developing a problem would be nice)

Cheers
Frankie

Check a plug hasn't come loose, it's not unheard of for this to happen.

I had a coil pack failure last year and now always carry a spare in the car. You are very welcome to 'borrow' my spare so long as you either return or replace it in the next few weeks.

I am in North Herts.

Tested all packs by disconnecting them one by one whilst under idle and listening for engine tone change.. One made no difference so is suspected faulty.. Checked the plug and it had loads of un burnt fuel so would explain the smoke..

Put a working pack ion the spark plug and it sparked no probs..

Being a Saturday no where has these in stock and the cheapest quote I've had is £138 for one!

Any suggestions of where to get one? I've got a gold S2KI membership..

Thanks for all your comments..

To sum up - you noticed white smoke and loss of coolent, which points to a h/g failure - you gave her a bit of a tickle, then you lost power and one of your cylinders isnt firing correctly/at all?

At which point would a faulty coil pack cause coolent loss/white smoke?

If the compression is down on one cylider due to gasket failure, that will mean that the plug would be covered in unburnt fuel as it doesnt have adequate compression to fire correctly...

I am sure I have missed a sentence that says you have checked all this though! :-)

Coolant level could be a coincidence tbh, just check the coilpack first
