Good points, the flip side is why pay £1-2k more for a rebuild vs a 2nd hand lump when you're going to be rolling a dice either way.. hmm

Yes. Must bite the bullet and find one. The honing is only a light one. Doesn't need much (machine shop does it for me).

The three I've done are still alive.

No need to hone unless the bores are scored.

If my motor ever ends up in bits, I have decided I would buy a Spoon short motor. After reading some of the unfortunate stories about re builds and units from salvage companies, for me it is the piece of mind option. All be it an expensive one

Indeed! It's more like they run it down just to clean, not to actually "mark" it as it were.

The honing specification is the bit that looks quite daunting if you read how Honda recommend:
  • Use a rigid hone (not a ball hone) with GC-600-J or finer stones for nonferrous metals. The honing pressure should be 200-300 kPa (2-3 kg-cm2, 29-43 psi).
  • Use an oil type honing oil.
  • Hone at 45-50 rpm to a 60 degree-crosshatch pattern.
  • Do not stroke the hone more than 20 cycles.
