Default engine oil in gearbox ?

hi people i had my car in a friends garage getting a service, engine oil and gearbox oil the gearbox oil they said is not gear oil but engine oil ? i thought this to be very strange but they said they rang a gearbox specialist and they said it is true because it has an oil cooler built into it ?
but when i searched on here people are saying use redline gear oil, so this obviously is not what i have been told, the oil they put in has been in aprox 1000 miles should i change it ?

cheers

You should NOT use engine oil in the gearbox, the grade is completely different and both oils have different properties to suit their application.

The oil cooler has nothing to do with what type of oil you can use in it.

Old mini's have the engine oil for the tranny oil but thats because its in the same housing and they are designed like that.

Get that engine oil of the box and put some proper box oil in there!

You can buy the correct S2000 GB oil directly from Honda in a litre bottle, it's about a tenner.

As above, get that engine oil out of there before you knacker your syncro's!

In days of old, at least with m2b4 (h22a) and a few B series boxes you could run 10w 40 engine oil.

But why would you when you can have Honda's own MTF or Amsoil equivalents etc.

Speaking of which, sorry for the thread highjack but am I right in thinking that Amsoil MTF helps reduce the cold shift 'snicking' on our S boxes?

BTW if they made this mistake the likely hood is they used the wrong oil filter and didn't torque it correctly!
I'd be checking that ASAP as it has caused torched cars and trashed engines!

I would change the gearbox oil again after a thousand miles or so to help remove any last drops of engine oil that may linger when you first change.

oh dear oh dear totally wrong , oil is used in a very different way in a gear box, first thing is when i have changed mine it looks clean when removed but that by no means all of the story, the viscosity and the special additives for a decent box oil are so important , hence the comment's above about Honda MTF and the other special oils.

Where are the oil chaps with the full tech explanation's , perhaps they cant quiet believe this thread, I didnt when i first looked yesterday, I thought it was a wind up , or is it ???????????????

I bet the change is like a bag of rusty spanners, and the box shot after a 1000 miles or so

Flush it with MTF, then put new MTF in it ASAP...I really do mean that! Engine oil is nowhere near suitable for this gearbox.

If there are any untoward signs, ask for a new gearbox...even if it is your friend's workplace. If you get no joy...rethink your friendship

+1 for tightening the oil filter...I doubt it has been done correctly either.
