Sounds like a diesel!

Cold it still doesn't sound great either. Give HUK a call and get them to have stern words with the dealer. SHocking service.

First thought was a cracked exhaust manifold....

That amount of clatter, very reminiscent of a timing chain.
I had the same noise on bike engine I damaged, broken up top piston ring and land.
Little rough at idle, okay on song, used no oil as oil control rings still intact.
Compression would be down a bit though....

Yes, the noise is a tinny rattle and is quite distinct when the audio recording is played over a reasonable audio system it may not be so noticeable over laptop / basic PC speakers.

I thinks the sound is enhanced by the fact that the rocording was done indoors although it can clearly be heard from within the car when driving alongside walls, high kerbs etc that reflect the noise. Compared to my last (2003) S2000 which I also had from new, the cold sound is fine and no different.

Thanks Steve. Now the car's back on the road for spring I'll get it checked over thoroughly and will update the thread when I have got to the bottom of this.

Thanks everyone for your help. I was looking for advice from those with direct experience of the 09 noises and I'm grateful to those who have taken the time to post and contact me directly via PM

P1, how did you get on with your dealer/HUK?

Has the issue been sorted yet?

Thanks Kiteland

The current position with my car is that like Kiteland's car, the thrust washers have been replaced, the crankshaft end float is back in tolerance, but the noise has returned after only 100 miles.

I see THIS post from Kiteland (clicky) as very positive news indeed, and I am patiently awaiting the outcome of Honda Japan's investigations.

So that we do not end up with multiple threads discussing this issue I am closing this one now
