2002 - 106k, has been driven correctly on roads and tracks for over two years in my care. Touch wood - all good in the hood.

It seems the later engines are more likely to suffer bottom end failure, based on the regularity of such posts on here.

As mentioned by others before though; mileage is never a true indicator of wear. 50,000 miles done by someone who let's the engine warm up, cool down, services regularly and with the right stuff will be better than 10,000 miles of being ragged from cold and neglected.

Then there is the added variables like selecting the wrong gear and over-revving etc...

Mine threw a rod at 35K.

I think driving it like I stole it & a couple of trackday spins probably didn't help the lubrication.

It's not just low oil, I also think the oil temp is a factor.. the crankcase temp can get very high, particularly if you are having a track day.. oxidising the oil more and then bunging up lubricating points..

True; I also suspect that it might have been rings picking up or even a valve head breaking the piston first - Either could be metallurgy or abuse.

I'm glad some people have older cars with high mileage. This thread had me worried, mine is a my99 with 60k and I'm concerned it's going to fail on me now... :-(

I'd say 125k miles is about the expected life of an F20C.

I got a ap1 03, with 125k miles on it... I got it with 34k. I am losing oil though.. from what I read the ap1's tend to do that (since the day I got it). If u keep up with the oil and not let it get low.. I dont see a problem.

but like rapscallion says I stay away from 99-00.. I would say 02 and up esp with the glass vs the plastic soft top.

with about a decade's worth of experience I'd say the same

but I would add that I wouldn't touch a car with over 75K miles on it

it won't be long before the mileage is at 90K and I regard 90K-125k as the death zone

a decent replacement engine (fitted) will cost between £3000 and £5000

so in my book, a 2000my car with 100K on the clock isn't worth more than £2000
