As above, changing gear at either of those RPM's will mean that when you hit the next gear you will have less power to put down immediately, that's the main reason engines rev above the max power / torque figures...... area under the curve

That's something seriously terminal. I'd say things had "fallen out" of that engine.

Mine didn't do anything like that .. and I was north of that speed. No engine/oil lights either.

I got another 10 miles out of mine (to work, then back home) and it was still running, just extra loud diesel sound at certain RPM.

Did your car have enough oil in it to give a low pressure reading?

My SPA gauge said I did (if I remember right) .. I think that the SC had scavenged more than the engine could take.
