Engine blipping itself between changes?
I notice that when I jump into the car after work and pull up to a junction that I cannot get it down from 2nd into 1st without a major fight. What I've noticed more recently is that the gearbox still appears to be moving as though I'd just blipped the throttle before I depressed the clutch (which I never do), and once it stops I get it back into 1st a lot easier.
Is this something to do with the choke when the engine is cold or something? Or does the engine always blip between changes and with cold (and no doubt worn) gearbox oil, I'm just getting a side-effect of it?

It may well be that you are labouring the engine below where it wants to be when its cold.
i.e. if its cold mine nearly idle's at 2000 rpm. If your dropping below this when slowing down, as soon as you depress the clutch pedal in the engine management over compensates for you revving below where it wants to be, and the revs rise a little.
Maybe anyway!

Tims theory sounds possible, but I can say that changing my gearbox oil has made first gear much easer to select from cold, and gear changes are generally smoother.

when you pull up to a junction and change down, at what revs do you dip the clutch? does the engine want to rev higher when it is cold than the revs it is at when you dip the clutch?
the thing you describe about the gearbox running on sounds like your clutch could be dragging a bit.

Sounds like the syncromesh doing it's job trying to stop you sh*gging the transmission. If you want to get it into 1st properly whilst still moving try double de-clutching so you don't have to fight the syncromesh
