Default ELF 5w-40 Oil to top up

Evening all, just checked the engine oil level in my car and it's at about the 75% mark on the dipstick. I have some Elf 5W-40 oil that I used to put in my Clio 172, would it be okay to put say, 500ml of this in? I don't know if the car has 10W-30 or 5W-40 in at the moment. The car is due a service is due in about 6 weeks. Interestingly, both the Shell and Castrol websites recommend 5w-40.

Cheers

Check the service history and see if it says on any invoice on what is in there.

75pc mark is nothing to be worried about tho, I usually keep mine around that.

Okay, checked the service invoice from 2013 and it says "Shell Helix HX7 10W/", the last bit has been cut off. So I assume it has 10W-30 in it. Mixing oils is a no no?

Just to be clear, by 75% I mean it's 3/4 of the way between L and H. So it's not a problem to wait until the service? It's due on April the 5th.

From where you say the level is 500ml will over fill it, each "X" on the dipstick is 100ml try to keep it at the top "X" Castrol edge 5W/40 is the flavor of choise as it seems the S drinks less of it, mixing won't do any harm as long as you stick to fully synthetic especially as its only a few weeks.
Just seen your profile as yours is a 2005 oil consuption shouldn't be a problem but do go for an oil thats recomended by experenced forum members, don't try to skimp.

It'll be 10W40, and it's fine to top up with 5w40, though at 75% there's no particular need to.

I'd just keep checking the levels and not bother topping up at 75%.
