If you can tune into it on your car stereo then I would be pretty sure it's illegal

Maplins used to sell a mini FM transmitter for a similar price that worked a similar way - don't know if they still do.

Only thing that would concern me is whether they would interfere with legit emergency services radio - I know they are on different frequencies and low power etc, but the pirate radio regulations are presumably there for a reason

(won't stop me considering using one out of town though)

I only meant if you inadvertently blocked something important like an ambulance or fire engine trying to send a message.

Does that mean that the only reason for regulating radio transmissions is government paranoia ? (or for tax raising)

FM modulators illegal?? ing heck - I've got one in the CR-V as it only came with a single-slot CD. The guy in the shop never mentioned anything about it being illegal

The emergency services have moved to digital, they no longer hang around on FM.
It's a way of raising tax. that's about it. I'm not sure about the legality but many of the restrictions have now been lifted, there are even legal license free walkie talkies around.
I wouldn't have thought these transmitters would be any more powerful than the standard pelican crossing, some have been known to be very respectable broad band (radio) transceivers.
Haven't been up to date with the bands and frequencies for some time.

Technically they are illegal. i.e. pirate radio broadcast.
Which is bloody hilarious when you consider they've got a range of about 5 meters. (iirc)

So...
If you keep on the move they'll never find you.

NOTE: Transmitting range in a vehicle is approximately 6 feet. -- For home use, the transmitting range is approximately 30 feet. Reception strength will vary depending on the quality of the FM radio receiver (limited by FCC regulations) The Arkon SoundFeeders are FCC part 15 compliant.

The DTI are not going to be looking for you.
Technically the reason you all have radar detectors is to allow you to evade capture when you are breaking the law.

Does anyone know what frequency these things operate on
