Question E reg Escort Van

Boxing day, cruising down the M40 heading to a family do somewhere in London. In the outside lane I come up alongside an old escort van, fair enough it had been tarted up, resprayed, alloys and a loud exhaust. I looked across and eye contact was made with the driver, in sixth doing about 90MPH I thought this should be easy, how wrong could I be. Im guessing he knocked it down to forth before slotting into fifth and we both headed off up the desserted motorway. Upon reaching 140MPH I decided enough was enough and decided to drop back down to more law abbiding speed, I was absolutely gobsmacked to have only pulled approximately 5 or 6 car lengths ahead of him. My guess is he'd had a seriously modified RS turbo lump dropped in it. Just goes to show how looks can be deceiving!!

I couldn't agree more. For the amount he must have spent he could have bought a decent car. No matter how much money you put into it its still gonna be an escort van at the end of the day. My moto is "the key to building a fast car is to start with a fast one in the first place" !!

Yup. If your car isn't fast enough, buy another one.

A friend from work used to have an old escort van that was originally built by Severn Valley Motorsport. It was running a seriously modded RS Turbo motor with a hybrid turbo that put out just over 200 BHP.

The thing was though, it weighed bugger all. Fast as you like in a straight line, scary as you like round corners!!

Dave took me for a spin once or twice in that van. It suffered a bit from torque steer but it was very, very fast.

Similar thing hapened to me and a guy in a Fiat Brava, lowered, spoilered, alloyed and tinted he put his foot down and on one of only a few occassions I followed. He blew me away like I had stalled it!!! There was some serious modding going on and I gave up before I got to 90 as he was gone!
