Default Driving with no oil cap on

Drove about 80 - 100 motorway miles yesterday and upon arrival at my destination noticed smoke coming from under the bonnet. Lifted it up and there was my oil cap sitting on my valve cover.

I had topped up the oil that morning and forgot to put the cap back on. The car seemed to be fine though, the engine was just a bit of an oily mess. There was still plenty of oil left when i dipped her so i just drove home as normal and didnt notice any issues.

I know this it's not a good idea to drive around with no oil cap but does anybody know if there will there be any adverse affects due to this????

Cheers.

Al.

Apart from a very messy engine bay there shouldn’t be any issues.
Get a pro steam clean and nobody will ever know.

Did you forget to put it on, or did it vibrate loose? Because they do that.

Mine vibrated loose the other day, guessing it wan't put back on tightly after the oil change, sat in traffic and could smell fuel through the air vents, opened the bonnet and it was sat neatly on the vavle cover weird

I'd like to say it rattled loose but it was sitting nicely on the valve cover in the exact same spot i left it that morning so i cant use that excuse!!

I've bought some of that engine gunk de greaser so im gonna spruce up the engine bay next weekend, its lookin very old and tired.

I didnt know they could vibrate loose, ill keep that in mind when tightening. Cheers dudes.

It might just be because I am getting to that time of life, but I can't for the life of me understand why any one would want to start a thread about leaving his oil filler cap off. It's about as interesting as starting a thread about putting fuel into the tank.

Words fail me,they really do.

I've heard of the oil filter working it's way loose through vibrations but not the oil filler cap - so I too will bear this in mind!
