Disclaimer: replies are made after a few beers.

Firstly the links that Welshman has posted are some of the best. I used them extensively when planning my route. They also highlight some motorbiking routes and if they are good for them they are awesome for us in an S.

The other trick I used was to look at bus/coach tour companies and their iterinaries as they give you some good pointers on where to stop and what to see.

I would get some kind of driving direction software so that you can plot the journey and change it. I changed mine constantly for 3 months adding new routes, changing others until I was happy with it. I can send you an Autoroute file for the routes I took.

Allow plenty of time to stop and enjoy the scenery. No fun rushing to the next destination. I did on a couple of days and although I loved every minute of the journey and driving I would have liked to have stopped on those days too. I wouldn't worry about booking too many hotels. I would suggest booking hotels at the important stops i.e. every 4 days or so but anything in between these destinations is best done enroute. It is more important to research good restaurants IMO.

The alpine roads starting before Switzerland, black forest of Germany, are where the fun starts. I don't remember using the motorway routes at all after I hit Strasbourg except when I was returning or in a rush between cities.

Lake Como is a wonderful area to stay in. The wine is fabulous too. There are plenty of road in the Dolomites worth visiting. Staying in a spa hotel near Stelvio would be very relaxing too. Tuscany is highly recommended for at least 3-4 days to unwind and chill. I would highly recommend some cooking and wine classes at one of the local places and visit places at an easy pace.

Any more I can help with?

PS: Nick, sorry I didn't respond to your thread but I hadn't seen it.

My life long dream to drive across Europe in a S. Does anyone want to borrow me one? There is a place in London that rents it for 80 pounds or 100 pounds a day, but thats too much for me.

We could always do a swop, i borrow ur car and u borrow mine when u visit Jhb or Cape Town... Road in and around Cpt are spectacular.

Can you include speed camera locations?
