Default Drilling out brake disc screws - question

I've been reading a few posts about the best method for removing those pesky screws that inevitably get stuck in the discs. Some good advice ranging from heating, freezing, club hammering, impact driving, drilling and dremeling.

Sadly, I butchered the screw heads before reading most of this information, so drilling is the likely option. My potentially stupid question is, assuming I drill the head off, how do I get the shaft out of the housing without wrecking the thread? I know these screws aren't essential, but I like to replace them so would rather not completely fubar the housing.

If your lucky and only remove enough of the head to enable you to get the discs off you may be able to unscrew the rest of the bolt using vice grips or similar, or using a small diameter drill bore a hole threw the retaining screw and remove the remainder using an easier out. HTH

Have you tried a screw extractor ?

Failing that drill out slightly smaller and re-tap the thread .

I easily removed mine with mole grips after I removed the heads with a drill.

When I did the CRV I used an impact driver and I didn't need to drill.

Actually I think I have a screw extractor somewhere. Failing that, I'll try to just take the head off

after drilling the head off, take off the disc, then plug weld a nut over the remains, then spanner it out

I always use a center punch if tight.
or small chisel.

I had to drill mine off, once head was off and disc removed, I could remove by hand. Replacement screws bought from Screwfix. Got a box load now. Just need cutting down a bit.

Much cheaper than buying OEM and you have plenty to last a life time.

Hammer in a torx head.

I find that using the right bit and hammering that in with a few taps also makes it come out easier

Yes that's what I did. Still took me a while.

The only thing you'll achieve by putting new screws in is making it hard to do next time.
