There could be a rather fundamental flaw that everyone is overlooking here <prepares to be shot down in flames...!>.
How many people actually turn the side/headlights ON before starting the car up. I wouldn't have thought the Engine start light would come on unless you do. I'll check mine when I head out to work in a mo.

the "engine start" lit up as soon as the ignition is switched on and is independant of the sidelights
where i work its pitch black at night as there are no artifical lights around outside so it was easy to see the dimly lit switch.
i might go for 100watts to make it easier to see

Why dont you put the interior light on?
Dont tell me - its too dark to find the switch.....
