Default Does this seem fishy to you ?

Just got back from the dealers after having had the 54K service.

Supplied my own engine oil and some redline for the differential. I specifically pointed out that it was oil for the diff.

On the sales invoice it says "carried out 54k service.....replaced transfer box oil supplied by customer"

I asked him if what they meant by transfer box was the gear box. They said that they had replaced the gear box oil too, free of charge. Very bizarre I thought as its not even part of the 54K service.

They had also automatically discounted me 10% off the bill saying that they do this for all their customers.

Now I really do hope that I am wrong, but I'm starting to get the feeling that they put the diff oil in the gearbox hence the "gearbox oil for free" and 10% off the bill.

I am right in assuming that the transfer box is the gear box and not the diff ?

So what do you think ?

AFAIK the transfer box is the diff box ??

Will look on the EPG/ESM when I get home.

Have my bill here from Saturday.

Clearly states:

Change rear diff oil.
Change gearbox oil.

No mention of a transfer box.

I was hoping so. Still doesn't explain the "gearbox oil for free", but that was the guy on the desk and not the service manager. They've certainly changed both, looking at the number of washers used.

2 x washer plug 14 (D1A01)
2 x washer plug 20 (D1A02)
1 x washer plug (D1A03)

And why change the gearbox oil if it's not on the service interval ? and for free ?

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt for now, but something doesn't feel quite right to me.

EDIT : Just done some Googling and the diff is the transfer box, but still doesn't explain the 10% off and free Gearbox oil change. Maybe they're just a nice bunch ?

they might have used your diff oil in the GB too which would be very bad news indeed! How much diff oil did you give them?

also you need to check what oil they used in the GB. It should be MTF Type 2 and not engine oil. Make sure that they know this but without letting them know what you know.

1 US quart so only really just enough for the diff (I think it's 0.8 US quart to fill the diff)

I think the GB needs 1.5 US quarts.

A transfer box is not a diff (at least not in a Landrover, where it is connected to the gearbox and I think allocates the drive to the front and rear axles).

Hmmm the plot thickens.

I may have to give the service manager a call tomorrow in an attempt to clarify matters.
