Ok done everything suggested (Thank you everyone for your input). I removed the HID bulbs from both headlamps and swapped them over. The good one works in both (so nothing wrong with the connections, etc) but when I took a closer at the one which wasn't working it seemed to have a small burn mark at the connection. (With hindsight really should have taken a picture.)

There is, what looks to be, a spot soldering on the bulbs connection. It wasn't there on the faulty one so I carefully tried to replicate it. (I can almost hear the air being sucked through teeth after you read that...)

Having successfully done that I replaced the bulb. Initially it didn't work so though bugger got to get another one.
But now it intermittently works. I can't seem to work out a pattern to it except that if the lights are off long enough to get cold it comes on but if I have the lights on for even say 5 seconds and then turn them off and back on immediately, the faulty one stops working again.

That would suggest some heat issue?! Only thing I haven't tried is to change the ballasts. (which unfortunately is an even longer task than removing the bulbs).

Any suggestions? Thoughts?

Thanks for the info Rhino but what insulation at the base of the lamp? Didn't seem to have any insulation when I removed them...

The insulation I'm speaking of is the hard plastic that the base of the lamp is made of.

Either that or you've got water into the connection somehow and it shorts out at certain voltages
