Dixcel brakes + first outing to a circuit in s2000
Thought it would be a an idea to share my initial impressions of my dixcel brake setup as I've now had it for a month.
I have the fast road setup which consists of the slotted front discs, plain rear discs and z pads all round. In addition brake fluid has been replaced with motul rbf600.
My initial thoughts when braking from high speed was that there was a bit of squirm (ie. tugging movement of steering away from centre); Now I wasn't sure whether it was a characteristic of the car, the braking system, the uneven uk roads or the brake setup. After some bedding in of the brakes the car seemed to settle down somewhat though I needed some smooth open roads to really test it.
The following week I went to Nurburgring and did a few laps there. Braking from high speed felt pretty good on the first lap then as I grew more confident in the brakes I was then more confident in pushing the s2k to higher speeds, both on the straights and in the corners. Whilst of the subject of corners the standard handling of the s2000 is confidence inspiring. At the limit I could hear tyres screeching but at no point did it feel like it would bite back. I wanted to push it harder and harder!
Back to the brakes. Initial bite is more positive than the OEM setup (which is very much welcomed) and still very progressive but has great stopping power when pushed harder. When pushed to its limit I could feel the abs kick in and the car stayed straight and true. Testament I believe to the setup of the car (4 wheel hawkeye alignment) and overall braking system. Confidence when braking I would say is much improved.
And the squirm? well I believe it to be some dodgy cambered uk roads as the s2000 seems to track/tramline a bit but will update if I discover otherwise! Hope this is helpful for some. Off to find some more wide open roads.....
