Default Diff shaft play

My car has developed a bad vibration from the rear when accelerating at any speed over 40mph. At first I thought it was the inner CV joint, which is well documented on the US site. When I inspected it the nearside diff output shaft has a lot more play in it than the offside one. Has anyone had this problem? My car has done just over 50 000 miles.

My local dealer (Brighton Honda) balanced the rear wheels but that didn't help. They want the car for a couple of days to investigate - sounds expensive...

Have you tried fitting new hub nuts with higher torque setting ?

Didn't PL have this problem when he changed his diff?

Fecked LSD IIRC.

I had the same problem, Turned out one of the bearings in the inner CV had shattered. I just replaced the CV (easy job) and its all sorted now..

The knackered LSD caused more drivetrain noise, rather than a vibration. However, I have also had the half shaft vibration that the OP is referring to.

I'm getting a little hacked off with the S2000 at the moment (seriously considering returning it to stock and selling everything off) as I don't use it for track work any more and therefore the stiff ARBs etc are getting on my nerves. I have replaced the rear ARB with the OEM item and I'm going to change the front ARB back to stock too.

If I sense half shaft vibration after I've done that, I'll be buying some half shafts from Fenland or Furber Bros.

Hmmm,

any connection between the dissatisfaction & the Ginetta in your avatar?

That's the problem, Nick. What do I replace my car with, without having to lay down a wedge of cash on top of the S2000 sale proceeds? It has to have an element of practicality and I don't want something unreliable. The G50 could be a purchase in a couple of years' time (if it is released) but the reality is that it will be too raw to be my sole car.

Back on topic, does the vibration happen in all gears, all revs? Does it seem worse under hard acceleration?

This thread has me a little worried. I've been getting some vibration while accelerating hard but also get a small clunk from the rear when moving from reverse to forward. I had assumed it was the hub nuts because they haven't been done before and the car has only covered 39,000.

It's being serviced tomorrow and I was going to ask them to check it out. Better get ready for a bigger bill than expected.

The vibration is definitely worst under acceleration and does'nt seem to matter what gear its in. Only seems to happen over about 40MPH.
