Had mine done at the 9k/1 yr. service.
Figured that I'd rather have it taken out after running in than leave crap in the diff. Over paranoid maybe but it was only 5 quid for the diff fluid and about 25 quid for the labour (but it was being serviced at the same time).
So I'd say get it done. Just make sure they put the right fluid in, not the crap for the CRV (or was it the HRV?) which will destroy the diff!
As for the 50 quid, well hardly a bargain but it is worth it imho.

From what I have read on these forums the diff seems to be a weak point on htis car (I think its basically the same unit - except for the torsen gears - as the MX5 but the unit is obvioulsy a lot less stressed on the Mazda). In view of this I plan to get the diff oil changed at every service.
A word of warning though - make sure the dealer uses the correct oil. Difficult to check this phsyically, I know, but make sure their invoice states something like:
"gear oil EP80/90 x 2 [1/2 litres]"
The important thing is that the oil is Extreme Pressure oil (or "hypoid oil") and the 80/90 rating. I woould not only ask them what type of oil they are going to use before they do the work (and I would walk if they didn't give me the right answer) but check that it is identified on the invoice.
BTW on my service invoice this cost me

I have just bought some diff oil from my local dealer. It's in 8FL.OZ. bottles and says Pro Honda Shaft drive oil. Hypoid gear oil SAE 80W90. Exceeds API service classifications GL-5 and GL-4. Recommended for Gold Wing and other shaft drive bikes. Does anyone know if this is the right stuff
Thanks

Silkolene BOA 90LS
A high performance mineral based oil for hypoid and spiral bevel gears, which has excellent extreme pressure, anti-corrosion, anti-oxidant, anti-foam properties. This unique formula contains friction modifiers designed to make BOA 90LS ideal for limited slip differentials operating under severe conditions including competition use. API GL5/6
Well that's what it says on the bottle.
Paid 25 quid for 5l but buggered if I can remember where. It was online though.
Will hunt out the credit card bill and let you know.
