Default Diff Oil Change

Hi guys, bought in some diff and transmission oils from the great people at Opie. All setup to do the diff oil first as it seemed easier to access by driving the car up onto some home ramps.

Anyway, slid underneath the car to start, and I tried my socket on it with the wrench, nothing, then tried it with the solid bar, nothing, then tried it with a wheel nut bar with the correct socket on and still no movement (although, it wouldn't stay on well due to the angle of the bar).

How on earth do you undo the bolt, I was literally pulling myself along the floor swinging on this thing, and im not weak, and it just wouldn't budge. How have you guys managed to get it undone?

I wondered about applying some heat from a blowlamp just to ease it a bit, but just want to get some advice first.

Thanks,

Ben

On diff plugs in the past I've used a bar with socket ready to loosen it, and tried to jack up the bar with a trolley jack and did the trick. It'll act against the weight of the car, just mind it doesn't lift up the car!

Ah so your saying press the jack on the part of the bar that has the socket on to basically hold it against the nut to stop it sliding off when applying pressure?

So that the jack applies pressure the bar which turns the socket, instead of manually pulling it to turn the nut the jack will do it instead. Got to wedge it carefully though in case it slips and jack up slowly in case it suddenly goes. Bit of plusgas or WD40 wouldn't go a miss too. I have used this to good effect on my Subaru I had last when changing the diff oil

Sorry Jonty but I think I'm being thick. I can't picture what you mean. Want to get it right before I bugger something royally up (

I always shock them off. Longer reach ring spanner and a dead blown hammer.

A couple of big wacks usually does the trick.

I don't think I have a 23/24mm spanner, only sockets.

This is why you always try the filler plug before the drain plug!

Use a breaker bar & bang it with a club hammer to shock it. Sometimes the 'wrong way' first helps. The plug is steel and the casing aluminium, so corrosion welds them.

Plus Gas or WD40 first is a must.

Yeah that makes sense, wouldn't be much fun if the drain plug comes undone but can't get the filler one undone.
