Dave

You might be amused to know that I bought that particular spanner while we were all together in France earlier in the year. I had a 23mm open ended spanner and a 23mm cranked ring - but not a flat ring combination. This is not a size that is in the usual sets you buy, and is not often on the shelves in stores either.

Presumably you have to get the car on axle stands to do this?

Also, do you need to replace the washers as well (are there washers on the plugs? ) ?

You do need to get under tha car - ramps or stands. I have access to a pit.

You should change the washers - from memory all four are different - drain and fill for the gearbox and drain and fill for the diff. I bought a few sets from the marketplace on the forum - which I think gives part numbers.

The plugs are all short bolts. The washers are a soft aluminium alloy that deforms easily to make an oil tight seal between the case and the head of the bolt. It is because they deform that you are not supposed to reuse them.

The first time I changed the diff oil it was disgusting! I was most alarmed but others have told me this is quite normal. I changed it again a few thousand miles later - still messy, but not as bad. I will be changing it quite frequently though. I hate cruddy looking oil!

Gearbox oil was nice and clean.

the bolts are all on pretty tight..so need to avoid rounding off with the spanners, a squirt of WD and tap with a hammer seemed to work very well to shift them..

They should not be too tight if they have been correctly torqued. However, what does seem to happen is the ally washers bind to both the bolt head and the casing. A thump - I suggest with a rubber mallet rather than a hammer - on a well seated spanner should do the trick. I had no problem with mine - perhaps a thump with my hand at most.

Problem I have is getting the thing jacked up horizontal in my garage. It is an old cobbled floor and very uneven. I had a nightmare getting the lower x brace on because of it.

Like Neil says last thing I want to do is lose it all 100 yards down the road I'll get them to do it at the next service! Plus I know I haven't got the illusive 23mm spanner!

Out of interest, and as I will be doing mine one day, why is a ring spanner specified? Why not a 1/2" drive socket?

I doubt there is enough clearance behind the nut to get a socket on.

Am I missing something?

On the service sheet in FAQ it says the diff oil should be changed at 27K or 36 months and the gearbox oil at 60 months or 45k

The dealer has never done either job?

Are we talking about a franchised Honda dealer?
