Default "Customer Protect" S2K care package

Hello all,

I put a deposit down on a 2001 S2000 on Saturday, and am picking it up this weekend. The dealer offered me a package by a company called Customer Protect which covers "All mechanical and electrical components" at

Not sure what the problem with the electrics refers to. The only thing that sometimes goes wrong electically is a the MAP sensor and the air pump. The air pump is an expensive failure, but rare, and the MAP sensor normally just needs a clean or a 'whack' to sort out.

I would ask to see the terms and conditions of the warranty before signing anything. The standard Hondacare extended warranty is adminstered by AON, and they are known to try and wriggle out of claims and if they do, Honda don't help.

The main thing to check if it covers is corroded bushes in the wishbones which some people have had problems with. It basically prevents the geometry from being adjusted and reset (and the s2000 is sensitive to geometry) and is an expensive repair as you have to replace the whole wishbone, not just the bush.

Are you looking at buying the car from a Honda dealer?

EDIT: i presume that specialist means 'non honda'

There have been problems with water ingress into the alarm circuit boards, and as stated above the MAP sensor. I've seen little else in terms of electrical problems.

The dealer told me that older s2000s have problems with their electrics which have to be reset, which can be expensive - this was his main selling angle. So I have three questions with which I would appreciate your help:

1. Does anyone have this package?
2. Would you recommend it, or if not, why not?
3. Are there any problems with older s2000s that might require this type of cover? Particularly, does anyone have any idea what the problem 'with the electrics' is?

The car has done 62k, and was bought from a specialist dealer.

All help and suggestions greatly appreciated.

He's lying - mainly because he will get at least 25% margin on the sale of the warranty.

I have yet to hear of "older cars suffering with electrical problems". I have a MY00 JDM import which I run without a warranty. Honda didn't want to know because its JDM so I went to Warranties Direct (for 1 year only).

They should be called 'Houdini Warranties' because they try everything possible to get out of paying (I'm hearing a growing number of complaints).

You car is a Honda and therefore inherently reliable. I choose to keep a few grand in a savings account in case of problems rather than to give it to those 'pocket dippers'.

If you do choose to buy a warranty - read every single line in the terms and make absolutely sure you know what the exclusions are.

Oh, and if you do find out about all these electrical problems - I'll be very interested to hear them

Good luck

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all your directions. This is obviously my first posting on the boards and I hope it'll be the first of many.

The dealer sells a lot of s2000s, though is not a Honda dealer. I don't want to name as there is nothing to shame (and hopefully will not be anything to shame in the future). The car has FHSH. If in three months' time everything is still tidy then I'll post up some positive feedback.

Andy - I work in a Honda dealer and I have not heard about these electrical problems, it seems to me that by telling you they suffer from "problems" that they should not sell the car in the first place - he obviously does not have confidence in his product.

Were there not any forum members cars in the For Sale section that you could have purchased?

Yes, it was s2000-4u - though I want to make it clear that I'm happy with them as a dealer so far, I just wanted to check out this protection and whether or not it was worthwhile. This is my first foray into car ownership where the vehicle is +1 years old and while my immediate response was to reject the warranty I thought it was worth checking with you guys to see if there was something which needed covering.

Davey, in response to your query I did not know of the message board until yesterday, when I came across it via the S2KUK site.

Don't buy the warranty then would be my view. If you want a warranty and the car has a full honda service history, you can always buy one from honda themselves. Davey2 works for a honda dealer so can let you know how much it would cost.

As for electrical problems, i'm sure that this was just a sales pitch for the warranty.

Why is is those insurance-type warranties either;

1) exclude eveything that actually goes wrong with the model.

2) have some silly maximum claim limit that wouldn't get you a decent valet on an S2000.

3) are called 'Warranty Holdings' & go tits up to re-start again the next day.
