I've found something out. They work out how much fuel you have left based on your consumption. For example. Going round Anglesey on Friday i used A lot of fuel. Stuck a tenner in a mile down the road and started the journey back to Llandudno - light on and no bars. As i travelled further, the light went off and bars up to 3 or 4.

Thats kinda cool
This would tie in with my experience.

If I Vtec a lot - as I do, I've kaned the last 3 bars quickly and the light comes on. So I then keep the revs under 6000 and limp to the nearest petrol station. After a few minutes of limping, the guage has normally gone up to 2 or 3 bars (the warning light always stays on though).

My sensible side says, if you pass an optimax, fill her up, even if you've got 1/2 a tank.

My Vtec side says, hang on, I don't want the extra weight !!!!

I've found that filling her up to the brim (ooer missus) means I can do the commute into Edinburgh (50 mile) at reasonable speed down the A1 without using more than two bars. The same journey on 1/4 tank has me down to on or two bars.

There aren't any Optimax (or similar) stations btwen work and home and on several occasions I've forgottn to fill her up and driven the commute with the fuel light on (gritting teeth and cursing very other driver NOT doing 57.783456mph!).
