Yes, fuel gauge is v unreliable - I once started the car and went for a drive , and even 15 minutes or so the fuel increased by 1 bar until it reached about 5 bars. Having just got the S I thought this was great - I was actually getting fuel for driving the car!

Yep mine does it too. First week I had it I noticed that that fuel gauge when it got down to 1-2 bars actually went up to 4 bars within a few miles. As they say in the Software industry, not a bug just an "undocument feature".

I find like others it drops away quickly at the end but most cars I have driven exhibit something similar.

However none of them have added half a tank of fuel which happened once with the S. Thankfully it has not done it again. Dealer couldn't offer any suggestions.

I'm with you AE. I think it is indicating how far you can go at the current rate of use.

I have the same thingy in my Jeep.

I haven't had any problems with my fuel guage. Are they supposed to be accurate?

Mine is as accurate as any other car I have owned, the last 3-4 bars jump of the scale quite quickly. There was one occasion when I filled the car up and the gauge only registered 3/4 full. But when I filled up the next time it was fine.

Any car gauge tends to be rubbish.

In reality the fuel light gives you quite a bit of leaway. I did 40ish miles with the light on on Sunday. Unfortunately that 40ish miles did not end at a petrol station. It ended stalled at the side of the road on a hill. So this is warning to fuel bingo players (damn you clarkson) don't try and go more than 40 miles with the light on unless you have a can of petrol with you.

Thank you very much to the local man who gave me petrol on Sunday evening. Stupid Middleton-in-Teesdale petrol station closes before 6pm on Sunday and my fuel snobbery made me drive past the BP station in Hexham.

But to end speculation, I got 296.3 miles from a quite literal tankful.

I recently did with no lights remaining on the gauge.....three 0-110mph runs at crail and associated waiting and then a good 10-15 mile drive to get fuel. I've also done about 20 miles in that state before and through traffic as well although I was getting very nervous towards the end.

Its not a fuel guage, its a distance left guage.
