Corroding Wheels - Latest From Honda UK
After our visit to Marshall Honda, Reading, today, I have just received a call from Peter Squires, their after sales manager, to update me on my corroding wheel warranty replacement.
Peter has had information from Honda UK that the issue has been passed to QIC, Langley (sp?). This is, apparently, Honda UK's quality control department. Peter said the normal procedure is for a service bulletin to be issued after they come to any conclusion.
SO, definite for Marshall Honda and Peter Squires for volunteering information.
Slight disappointment - Peter is quite definite that warranty replacements are exactly the same as the old "corrode on contact with water" style (thanks for the description Ian!).
Good & bad news folks.
More news, live, as it happens.......
Keith
PS. Ian - we (me) weren't trying to usurp your investigations with Honda UK - Marshall did this unexpectedly, only after my regular warranty claim.

I know that there are yards of comments elsewhere about this corrosion thing, but I will add my thoughts here. I made these observations at the weekend when removing the wheels for a post winter clean.
1) The finnish is only applied to the exterior of the wheel, the inside of the rim and revervse of the spokes is untreated.
2) These interior areas on my wheels, on a garaged car 5k miles, washed weekly inc wheels and waxed were showing signs of black deposits,Aluminium Oxide (rust) .
3) One can only deduce that this corrosion will creep under the finnish at the edge. Is this the problem we are suffering from ?
4) Corrossion will bubble and blow of the paint finnsh on Aluminum as in steel, just look at Range Rover and Defender Aluminium body panels. All the Land Rover people refer to this as Ali worm !
5) Also with the brake dust including iron from the disc's is this not also going to cause electrolitic action in the presence of an electrolite , i.e. water and salt ?
6) I have noticed that the 02 cars wheels are finnished inside, but with the exterior polished section they may suffer a similar fate on the outside, unless the whole wheel is laquered ?
Surley this must mean that Honda are liable as a result of bad design and manufacture resulting in a resonable claim for the wheels not being "fit for purpose" and having Latant Defects.
Well thats what I think!!!!

My "corrode on contact with water" wheels appear to have been in contact with water .....
..... and are corroding.
These are replacements which were fitted about three months ago and have only seen a few thousand miles.
