Get a sniffer test done ASAP...once we know the result of that we can narrow down the potential defective component(s).

As I said above, the smart money's on an HG.

If it's overheating within 2 mins, that's probably because the gasses are creating an airlock and it's that which is causing the overheating.

see also, If it appears to be boiling out of the expansion bottle, it might just be the exhaust gas bubbling through.

Sniff test the coolant (your nose may detect something obvious, but more than likely you need the tester).

Test the compression / leakdown values.

Lloyd, what was the compression test results - I think that SWMBO said that you had one already?

Its not conclusive but they need to be about 190 and within 10% of each other - just out of intrest does the car seem to take more to turnover and start when warm ? or cold even ?

Hi, I have had a compression test done about a month ago, three cylinders were about 210 and one was about 185. Not sure of the exact figures as I am at work but will check tomorrow.
As for starting, I have not noticed any difference of late.

Right guys, worst scenario has played out, it is the head gasket the sniffer test confirmed it, it must be on number two as my compression test last month showed 205, 180, 205, 210 respectively.

So what does it involve? I know I will need new gasket and head bolts.

I was thinking of a spoon HG or similar rather than standard, any suggestions.

It seems fairly minor at the moment, any major problems with minimal use until arrangements are made for the change?

Well I guess I'd better ring around now to see what people will quote before trying to blag help to diy it.

What SC setup do you have?
Might be an oppurtunity to up the boost and reduce the compression?

You will obviously NEED a new HG, but you may want to replace the inlet/exhaust manifold gaskets at the same time, along with the head bolts as they stretch.

You will need to get the head pressure tested and skimmed too, this will ensure you don't have to do the job more than once. I know a couple of people who have skimped on this part to save a bit of cash, but had to do it all over again as the head wasn't perfectly flat...which we know is very important.

Whereabouts in W.Sussex are you? I'd be happy to help, having renewed several head gaskets before (albeit not on the S).

If the issue is causing overheating issues within two minutes of starting the engine I would avoid any use until you can get it fixed...

Very good point. You wouldn't want a warp/blow the head/block.

I'm not sure if the S has core plugs, but new ones are a PITA to fit.
