I swapped out the rad to a Koyo one. Fairly cheap. You'll need a new rad cap with it, so get a better one.

Did the thermostat and hoses at the same time.

I also amended the rad fans to run all the time.

It bought my water temps down massively and also my oil temps.

Once it's over-expanded & got air into the system, it won't 'suck back' the coolant from the expansion tank. Used to get this often with FIATs that use a similar system.

Obviously, you want this fixed before HGF becomes an issue (if it isn't already.

Get the pressure tests done before you start swapping things. With my 124, I changed everything, finally the hoses. That fixed it!

All seemed well until the temp gauge on the dash would shoot into the red within two minutes of starting it.
Having just spoken to a mechanic, he reckons it's the HG, seeing as the car overheats so quickly

It'd have to be a catastrophic failure for the engine to overheat so quickly if it is the head gasket and if it was that bad a failure you'd be seeing oil in the water or water in the coolant.

Sniffer test on the coolant would rule that out.

Not necessarily; the engine if FI and the HG isn't designed for that - a blow between a pot and the coolant galleys wouldn't affect the oil/coolant passages.

Best test is if the coolant niffs of exhaust gases.

What ECU are you running?

If it's AEM, the temp will sit at no bars for an age. Then fill ALL the bars in.

It's of no use to anyone with an AEM.

(get a modify gadget to fix this, or a 19in1 serial gauge, or a proper water/oil temp gauge)

True, but it would be pressurising the coolant system rather than overheating it in that time.

I'm running an AEM with the modifry fix! As well as SPA oil temp gauge.

When the water gauge has spiked in the past the oil temp has been as low as 50 degrees.
