Last year, I had my S insured with First Alternative - an e-sure company. I am told this year that FA are no longer operating and that e-sure do not cover this type of vehicle. So I get a quote via confused.com and go with Sainsbury's to find that they are underwritten by e-sure. Confused - I am !!

It's in the terminoligy.
They are probably underwritten by the same people as e-sure. Rather than e-sure being the underwriters themselves, or it might be e-sure re-branded. (or whichever company does e-sure (Churchill??)
Insurance is a baffling game, lots of the supermarket insurance etc are actually someone else just rebranded - a bit like Tesco Value Beans (Made by heinz, but labelled Tesco)
Lots of the insurance companies have lots of different brands.

The small print on both e-sure and First Alternative says they "arrange and administer insurance by e-sure services Ltd". My e-sure policy on the Accord is actually held with the Halifax bank (nee building society) so maybe that's where the buck stops.
First Alternative are "changing their underwriting strategy" and are no longer quoting on my S2K policy. Neither will e-sure, so it just seemed a bit crazy that Sainsbury's are offering me an e-sure policy.

Just tried to get a quote for the Impreza through confused. Spend 15 minutes filling in all my details to be told it couldn't quote me and do they mind if they call me. Yeah I fricking mind - you've just wasted 15 mins of my time for nothing.

Esure belongs to the Royal Bank Of Scotland. I believe and RBS company underwrites for Tesco insurance as well via a Direct Line Group company.
In fact, it seems most insurance underwriters now are owned by one of about 4 or so companies.
