What? It is designed to be driven to the red line in all gears. You won't get the book 0-60 without doing that.

Back on topic - never had a clicking on vtec engagement.

Is the clicking similar to the air con clutch noise?

Kinda. It's like a louder version of the click you hear when the air pump kicks on and off.

Yep, I have heard it. Very intermittently though and if it does it I do not hear it again for a while. Never have had any issues that I can tell. I am not 100% certain it is VTEC though as I feel it has occured prior and sometimes after VTEC has engaged. I never seem to hear it unless I am autocrossing or on a track so I am never listening for exactly when it occurs. I lost both motor mounts at a track event this year and noticed that one had been torn for a long time (it was dry inside). I cannot say for sure I have heard the noise since, so it actually may have just been movement of the the first mount that went that I was hearing under load. So wont know that for sure until it is time to get it back out and drive it after winter.

As far as someone mentioning not hitting VTEC in first... what??? The car is designed to do what it does in any gear. It is not going to hurt the car to run it the way it was designed. I cant imagine avoiding VTEC all the time in any gear :P

No click, but if I'm honest since owning the car I see no 'dramatic' difference at a certain rev range. It's a 2004 so its more subtle anyway?

Agree, funny hearing about the 'vtec kick' from owners of the later cars.....there's nothing except for the noise and surge until reaching that lovely rev-limiter cut out.....

I've never heard a metallic click either, I just keep the revs over 5800 - problem solved
/edit
Seriously, it could be the 2nd cam follower pistons slotting into place to lock the vtec cam profile in place - although no idea why you'd hear it

In stock form from what I can tell the high power cam (AKA VTEC cam) is only engaged above 6000 rpm at near WOT -- or at least significant throttle pressure. Otherwise the engine remains on the "economy" cam. It's therefore possible to never have the high power cam engage if you never push the car. The car cruises on the economy cam at all RPM not requiring WOT.

At WOT the change in cam -- and power -- is "VTEC Yo!" If you're baby driving the car you'll not experience any dramatic difference.

I'll listen for a "click" but have never noticed even a hint of it.

If you get no dramatic difference, clean the filter in the VTEC system and do a ECU reset, you will then, did this on my MY56 plate.
VTEC is engaged with a solenoid and using an oil pressure switch, could be one of them?
