I bought my (white) Scooby privately from a guy in London. I don't think he had ever washed, never mind polished, it and it was covered in marks and ingrained dirt. On the drive home I kept worrying that I'd done the wrong thing, wondering what it would look like after a good wash. I consoled myself with the thought that it was a good price and had lots of nice extras.
Anyway, after washing it thoroughly I clay barred it all over and I've never been more amazed by anything! Marks came off effortlessly that I'd assumed were scuffs/scratches, and all the ingrained dirt just lifted off. The car looked like new afterwards (the clay bar was black though!), and a good polish then wax just finished it off. I've also used a clay bar to remove mild overspray when a panel on our old MR2 was resprayed, again it worked amazingly well. It's one of those rare products where you can actually believe the hype.
I've not used it on the S2000 as yet, as I know it's been polished regularly from new and is garaged out of the weather most of the time anyway...
Edited to add that water is indeed fine - as long as the panels are nice and wet, it will work a treat. Having said that, the detailing spray you get with the Meguiars clay bar is great stuff and smells lovely!

Although the smell reminds me of a chemical toilet at times.
