1. very difficult to enforce-speed limits are maximums, better to drive slower if unsure of the conditions.

2. I think the law as it stands actually covers this-although doesn't appear to be enforced. What about changing the law to make it legal to undertake?

Other moggy rules of the road.
a. if, on a single carriegeway, you are driving below the speed limit (say 20% below) and there are >5 cars behind you, you must pull over at the safest opportunity and allow the vehicles to pass.

b. No HGV's on public roads in rush hour.

c. variable speed limit on (some) motorways, going from 50mph in rush hour rising to 100mph in quiet periods.

d. failing to indicate in an appropriate manner-three points
  1. You would fail your driving test for that, so you should be charged with an offence for doing it. Doing 40 or 50 on a 70mph D/C (or even an NSL A road) is unsafe.
  2. Yes it does, but the only ones you hear about when it's enforced are the "and finally" reports at the end fo the news. It needs to be hammered home aggressively. Yep, making it legal to undertake (so long as it's done smoothly and with indication) would be fine by me.

In South Africa, the motorways are signposted with maximum and miniumum speed limits - in normal circumstances it is an offence to be outside of these limits. I doubt that they are adheered to though.

Oh, and we will need signs that read 60, rather than simply NSL for this to work.
good point.

I think, given technology, any new traffic lights should use some kind of intellegent traffic flow device, that is increase/decrease red/green signals to improve traffic flow. And also left filters should be brought in. Additionally roads should be widened slightly to increase the size and amount of filter lanes.

forced to drive on the hard shoulder of motorways.
Are you mad?

Where do you go if you break down?

All we have to do is remove the stupid fecking limiters off the trucks and allow them to travel at the same speed as the rest of the traffic. Then they wouldn't be side-by-side for 3 miles as one truck goes 0.0001mph faster than the other.

Well, than and make all goods travelling more than 150 miles go by rail.

And better enforce tacho restrictions on driving so the drivers don't keep falling asleep and killing car drivers.

And ban LHD lorries so they stop pulling out into cars that are driving alongside on the motorways.

Now we're getting into fantasy world......

Local Authorities are making their roads harder to negotiate at the moment, they want congestion.

They've seen the money Ken's raising in London and want a piece of it......

allow undertaking on motorways

but only by cars

commercial vehicles would include white van man; they would not be allowed to undertake and would be barred from the outmost lane of any motorway

put a height restriction on headlamps - that would sort out dazzling by 4 x 4s

make displaying an insurance and MOT disc compulsory
