The codes don't seem to be much help when it comes to something mechanically wrong, rather than a sensor misbehaving. That's my understanding anyway (I don't know anything about engines).

When I had a misfire I had two of those generic misfire codes. But it didn't tell them anything so they had to go through trying a load of things to narrow it down. It turned out to be the injectors in my case, but that was after they'd confirmed the compression was okay.

Its not too difficult to fault find a misfire. Even less excuse if its sat in a dealership and you have lots of nice tools around you!
Some hints in my signature on misfires.
Where it gets tricky is if its none of the obvious things. Then they have to start earning their corn. Or rather, that's whent hey clutch at straws and start charging you lots for parts they dont need.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the plugs it's just 170 quid that I didn't need to spend last week and didn't make any difference to the problem with the car!
