cd player reader thing.
Christmas is approaching and I want to buy myself a pressie.
I've heard of a cd player that you can load cd's into that then record the playlist etc like a computer hard disk which you can then play back whenever you see fit without the cd.
What are these things called (sorry totally ignorant with this stuff), how much, are they worth it?

Is that a very roundabout way of describing an mp3 player?
It comes with software which allows you to "rip" the contents of the CD and converts them into computer-readable mp3 format. So long as you have an mp3 head unit, you can then burn up to 700Mb worth of files (depending on the quality of sound at which you rip, an average 3 minute track will take up 5-6Mb) onto a CD to play through the head unit.
If that's what you mean, you can pick up a halfway decent mp3 H/U for a couple of hundred quid. Be aware that you need a computer to rip and store the mp3 files though.

Do you mean one of these?
Yamaha CD Recorder
There is another one I've seen that only records uncompressed (ie not MP3) but I can't remember the make. I guess it depends on the size of your cd collection as to whether you need to compress them or not.

I think this is what you are looking for, basically you put your cd in and it gets recorded to the internal hard drive, and then you don't need the CD again.

You need to go to page 10 and select the Sony MEX-1HD
Pioneer also make something similar, but i'm not sure if Sony or Pioneer make a decent coverter for the dash controls.
IMHO I would by a Alpine 9815-RB MP3 head unit save myself

But as I said above, bear in mind that the Alpine head unit only plays the mp3s - it relies on you having some other means of ripping the music into mp3 format and then burning it onto CD
