Carrera 4S Cab........but why?
saw one of these today and could't help thinking that the car just looks 'wrong'......which got me thinking who buys such a car?
Surely if you want a Porsche but with the option of no roof surely the Boxster S would be the best bet since it's been designed as a convertible right from the start and not a fixed head with the roof chopped off
The Carrera 4S in coupe form is my favourite 911 but in convertible form...not a chance

Why a C4S rather than a Turbo? It's mutton dressed up as lamb - a Turbo bodykit but without the turbo-charger. I'd always assume that people would think I had bought it because I wanted them to think it was a Turbo but I couldn't actually afford one.
Save yourself however much extra and just get the Carrera 4, which doesn't pretend to be something that it's not.

Mark
I am pretty sure it get's a subtly different rear end treatment.....also I prefer a normally aspirated delivery hence the C4S would be my choice.....
I can't agree it's mutton dressed as lamb Mark, it's just different, one is normally aspirated and the other turbo-charged.......the GT3 would be too hard core for me so the C4S would get my vote

Of course they're different in performance - that isn't what I meant. Apologies if I was unclear.
My point was the the only thing which distinguishes the C4 from the C4S (at least as I understand it - I'm no 911 expert) is that the S has the same body shell as the Turbo. So, it LOOKS like the Turbo, but doesn't go like the Turbo. I've never really understood why someone would want to pay several thousand pounds more for a C4S when it's really just a C4 with a smart jacket on.
It puts me in mind to a certain extent of the kind of person who buys a 1.4 Escort and slaps on a Cosworth bodykit and big whale tail to make it look like the real thing. Or someone who turns a Mk II MR2 into a 355 lookalike - it's designed to make people think it's something that it's not. (Of course, that's not quite fair since it IS labelled Carrera 4 on the tail rather than Turbo, I think).
Anyway, back to your original point, some of the older 911 cabriolets do "work" for me - the 993 variant looked OK, as I recall. I'm not convinced at all by the current one though. As for why someone wouldn't buy a Boxster instead - simply because it doesn't have the same performance, I'd imagine - purpose-built convertible or not.

Mark the C4S has the turbo brakes, suspension...everything except the turbo charger.....I'd hazard a guess that the extra weight of the 'turbo running gear' and the extra weight of the convertible and the performance would not be that much different to a BoxsterS, in fact may be no difference at all
