Car seems to be smoking on idle
Hi guys
my car has started smoking a fair amount on idle, mainly when sitting in traffic / very low revs.
It's only started doing it today and i have absolutely no idea whats causing it, it doesn't seem to be smoking when i hit vtec or when decelerating at higher revs so fingers crossed its not the valve stem seals.
The smoke definitely looks slightly blue so it's an oil issue rather than coolant,
The car has a 3inch single exhaust with a decat and im running it on motul 5w40 oil.
Any ideas what could be causing this? it seems to be rather spontaneous, one minute it will be fine, the next it will start smoking a fair amount.
The car is due a minor service (oil change etc), do you think this could help solve the problem?

Have you overfilled the car by any chance? It may be burn off due to that?
After you hit vtec, let it drop to about 4k revs and boot it again - I've heard tat is another way to test the seals.
Failing that, you might want to ind a friendly garage and ask them to do a compression test.

Get a garage to test emissions, burnt oil is HC iirc
Could be a fuelling issue

Hi all,
As in my first post I mentioned it was blue smoke so it's definitely an oil issue , it's almost as if its been over filled with oil and running too rich but I haven't topped up for oil for a good few weeks and it only started doing it yesterday . It only seems to be on idle / very low revs, I may just take it to Dixon to get a leak down test done .

You can get compression testers for 20 quid. You just remove all the spark plugs, throttle wide open, screw the tester into spark plug hole and test.
Doesn't really matter what the pressure is as long as all cylinders are similar and it's over 120psi.
As it happens, I think this could be a blocked breather.
