Can overloading the boot damage suspension?

My wife and I went away for the weekend and loaded up the boot with all things you need for a weekend away. She is excellent at reading manuals and noticed that the maximun load for the car is 245kg. There is a big warning not to overload the car, as handling can be unexpected. Your two bags of gravel would have alrighy though I imagine
