Default CAI or Snorkel

Thinking about doing one or the other, but which one?

Is one better than the other regards sound,
or is one better for engine improvement regards heat soak

comments would be grateful - also best place to get items from?

You'll get next to no extra noise from a snorkel - but it should do away with the occasional kangarooing you get when it's hot and/or sitting in traffic, and may marginally improve throttle response.

Be clear about what you want to achieve - performance gains or extra induction noise. That will determine which way you go.

- Snorkle will make no difference to sound
- CAI will make difference to sound.

- Snorkle much easier to fit (if it fits in first place)
- CAI more of a DIY job, remove the current airbox, potentially cut some plastic away where the filter sits

- Snorkle not particularly dangerous with water ingestion
- CAI can if cited close to water suck up water which results in a mangled engine (water doesnt compress like air - rods bend!). To remove this threat you can fit a bipass valve (AEM)

- Snorkle in my experience does help stop the roo but at same time I replaced my filter for a spoon one - Therefore together both of these items have probably helped to push the cooler air through
- CAI gives gains on paper but never seen these proven - you could lose 2 or 3BHP but you will get the noise improvement if you are looking for that.

Snorkle - can be cheaper than CAI if you go for a Hong Kong fake (which generally fit well). End of day there is nothing to them
CAI - K&N/AEM are not cheap but probably better than the cheap ebay rubbish as more to them and a decent one will be easier to resell. I think you might end up replacing your airfilter more often though as it is probably prone to more dirt down there.

Also you could look at a happy medium.

K&N GenII which replaces airbox uses the bonnet to create its own airbox. Expensive @

well technically I think of a CAI as a lower level filter - ie down by you bumper drawing in cold air from outside of engine bay.. The PRM in my opinion is more like a short ram (like K&N Typhoon).

Thats my view anyway

<edit> Actually I think the Typhoon comes with extension so you can have it as a CAI down low or just as a regular short ram - short ram must suffer from heatsoak pretty bad though unless it is enclosed like the PRM.. whatdoI know Whoever bough LB's car can tell you all about that, Was it Tangoman? the short ram was choking the engine.

Nick, it was Saxo Boy that bought Lisa's car and yes he did have some grief with the CAI. I bought Slick's Again's car.

It was stock, but now has a number of Mugen goodies installed including the Mugen CAI;
