For me the glass screen was a must, also the rear of the 04+ revision just makes it look so much nicer, prefer the new dash layout also! (wish I had temp and mpg indicators though!).

It's not a case of the pre-04 being "hardcore" and post not being so - it's just that the earlier model is sharper then the later one, but the later one is overall less likely to put you in the scenery.
It's all relative though - I managed not to crash my MY02 into anything other than wildlife, and plenty of people have bent MY04+.

off to see a 2002 model today to see what they are like and what difference they are to the 2004 models.
very tempted on the 2002 models as i can save £3k easily!

I bought a 52 plate in the end, I think the 04+ model does look better but I like the rawness and sharpness of mine.
Its without doubt a PERSONNAL choice IMO, you will never get one dafinative answer i'm afraid.

04+ is the way to go with its glass rear screen, 17" wheels, better stereo etc etc. Fundementaly the cars are the same, so if you buy an earlier model and sort out the alignment they should drive similarly.
In the end it will come down to money;
04 on - £10k+
02 on - £8k +
00 on - £6k +
In the end I bought an 00 and will spend the savings on mods that suit my taste.

From reading hundreds of threads on here,
the only reason to buy older standard cars is the price.
I just wish people would stop BSing about it.
If you have never driven either then you wont tell the difference on a test drive.

What I can't find in FAQ is any reference to upgrades to the engine applied to MY04+ I understand there were a number, e.g. to valve train, and others which effectively reduced oil consumption.
