Default Burning oil

Sorry to bring up this old topic, however I recently did a full oil and filter change on 7th October, I check my oil normally once a week and have noticed it going down a quite a pace. I put 5w40 castrol edge TD in it but I am not sure what oil was in it before as this is the first change I have done since I bought the car.

I checked the oil earlier and it is 1.5 - 2 marks up from the L on the dipstick...I can't believe how quickly it has gone down, it definitely didn't seem to go down that fast with whatever oil was previously in the car. The only difference being the new oil and I have also recently fitted a decat to the standard system, there is also a manifold and AEM on the car which is a 2001 model.

I have probably done about 800 miles maximum since the oil change, does something sound wrong? I realise the earlier cars burn oil, but is this more than would be expected? My driving style is mixed, I definitely don't vtec everywhere I go but do give it a good thrashing now and again.

Advice welcomed....

Thanks

When I do an oil change, my level stays full up to about 700 miles. After that, it starts consuming, odly enough.

As to using less than 1l in 800 miles, the service manual says that the car can use 1l per 600 - 650 miles (1000km). At this stage, you are within tolerance.

It is bl00dy annoying though that the car burns oil - I'm using a 10w-40 semi at the moment, and it still uses oil.
Might try a 10w-40 fully next time.

Wow, really, I didn't realise those figures were considered to be within tolerance. Hmmm...that is quite a lot of oil to be going through, thanks for the info mate. Guess I will just have to keep top up bottles handy.

It's a nightmare considering the oil usage isn't linear - it could be fine for the first 200 miles, then use 0.3l, then use nothing, then use more. PITA!!

Yeah, had already checked the filter etc and everything is tightened as required and no oil leaks, no oil on driveway or parking space at work...definitely seems to be going through more oil than before though, wonder which oil was previously in it...maybe worth giving the 10w a go next time and see if it is any better.

Has anyone heard of the later cars gulping oil?
Mine used not a drop for the first year of my ownership (well not that I could see on the dipstick anyhow) and in the second it raced through two graduations (X's) on the dipstick in 5 months, I could discern no useage for 3 months then it dropped a further half a graduation in a month. Meanwhile the engine clatter is getting worse (only heard for the first time after the Silverstone classic) by the week.
Honda have fobbed my concerns about my cars oil consumption off as being in tolerance but it isn't in line with anyone I know with a later car.
It is going in for 'assessment' in a couple of weeks anyway but I am curious to know if anyone has this with a later model (mine is now on 13.5K miles).
