Yes, another vote for the A44 when it's quiet but if you know the road you can understand why it has a bad accident record.

It was in several papers I think, but the survey was carried out by the AA Trust. Here's the link to the report itself (pdf).

I can confirm that the A53 (Leek) is an absolute BITCH of a road - Gr8 scenery tho

that's a fantastic road, not far from where i wrote mine off though
narrow and twisty allong the shore of lochearn and lots of tourists wandering into the other lane if they go too fast.

its fab! "friends" i know did West Wales to other side of Oxford on that same road in 2.5 hrs... inc fuel stop!
