Always ask for the disks/pads that they replaced to be given back to you (same for any part that they replaced). You might find they suddenly turn round and say "Oh, sorry sir, we've double checked the brakes and they're actually fine" 
I think it is often enough to tell them that you are coming down to look at the car yourself.. with the parts still on the car..
I would not want a set of old brake discs and pads.. you would not be able to even carry them in one go back to your car
