Default Brake bits for occasional track

I've searched the forum; spoken to various people and have narrowed down to some extent my choice of bits for Fast Road and Occasional track use.

I want to avoid fade on track which could potentially scupper a track day and so I've decided to make a few relatively inexpensive changes to the stock braking system on my MY07.

PAD-wise I'm leaning towards Ferodo DS2500 front and rear (advised by Chilled to work well with the OEM rotors); I may upgrade at a later date and have been informed by Chris Franklin and also others that a Dixcel combo of pads and discs would be a next step up, but for now uprated rotors would be overkill for my needs.

FLUID-wise; Everypne I've spoken to highly recommends Motul RBF600; again recommended by Chilled and also Simon from Opie Oils.

BRAKE-HOSE-wise; I've been looking at the Goodridge braided hoses BUT arent as sure on this one; Reading other threads on this subject I noted that some braided hoses have the clip attachments to keep the line clipped to the damper; Is this correct and in which case do the Goodridge hoses have this or is this something more specific to hoses by the likes of Spoon/Mugen who are making them specifcally for the S?

and lastly.. Where is the best place to buy the pads and hoses? Unit8 appear to carry Ferodo pads and Goodridge hoses; any place cheaper?

All advice and opinions are very welcome.

DS2500 are a good choice and work well one the road and track until you really start to push them very hard. At that point you may find that you warp your discs or possibly even crack them.

If that happens, upgrade your discs to DBA4000 series. These seem to take the heat quite happily without cracking or warping and are still working happily on my car after 18 months with very little wear.

As far as i know, Dembo is very happy with the Dixcel setup he's got but bear in mind that they're not cheap and when used hard the sparks that come off may well damage the lacquer on your wheels.

The motul fluid is good, but bear in mind that you will need to change it every 6 months or so as it absorbs water much more quickly than standard fluid.

Personally, i wouldn't bother with the braided brake hoses. The standard ones are fibre reinforced anyway and are very short so the only gain you'll get with braided hoses is a possible improvement in pedal feel. They're more for 'show than go' (or stop in this case) in my opinion.

I used goodridge hoses without issue. Don't know if they had clips though.

Apparently there is a better fluid than the motul, but it's ok if you change it every couple of track days and/or 6 months.

DS2500 are fade free. And probably a good first step.

I used to get my DS2500 from Balance Motorsport.

Does anybody think hoses are worth it? Can't say I ever noticed much difference. Get a master cylinder brace instead for feel.

If you do get hoses, they do need the clips to attach to the damper. You risk an MOT failure if they're not properly located.

Having reliable brakes makes such a difference on trackdays, and having arsed around with all these options, I only got there with Dixcels.

Sparks are cool. Especially at night.

Sparks are cool. You're going to knacker your wheels on successive track days anyway, so Meh sparks!

I think Hoses on the S may be snake oil. but they may not. I had them on anyway. YMMV

I'm glad this topic has come up as I have been thinking of upgrading the brakes for a while.

I'm definitely going to try a set of the Ferodo pads as a first step and then decide if I need anything else doing.

So where is the best place to purchase the Ferodo's ?

Thanks.

Cheers Fellas

I'll not bother with the hoses yet then as it sounds like I'll be fine for the time being, me being a bit of a novice track dayer anyway.

With the brake fluid; Is this a one way street? ie, if I go to the DOT 4 Motul fluid can I easily revert to the Honda OEM DOT 3 stuff later or would all seals etc need replacing; or am I talking utter rubbish here and, is there perhaps a 'milder' fluid that would perhaps be more of a halfway house between the OEM stuff and the Motul fluid that wouldn't need changing quite so often but afford better performance (higher boiling point) than the Honda stuff?

You can mix and match DOT3, DOT4 and DOT 5.1 (but not DOT 5) without any problem.

If you boil some lesser fluid you'll want to replace it anyway. Better just get the good stuff.

I'll bung the Motul stuff in there then.
