I know what you mean - to us S2000 owners we would never buy one (not even the 3 litre), but at the same time it is a masterstroke by BMW and I'd expect it to be very successful. For starters the people who buy Z4s are not really performance enthusiasts - how many Z4s do you see on track days - they are for style conscious people who like quality (and there's nothing wrong with that, just not my bag) plus for that price what a great deal!

For people with a bit of spare cash who want to own a daring (love it or hate it bold design), respected, well made car then you are set. You have roof down cruising with zippy performance (in the context of how those buyers would drive and what they are used to).

I like the way Honda hasn't watered down the car to appeal to a wider audience. Can you imagine a 1.4 litre S2000, the thought makes me sick.

I thought the Z4 had not been the success the Z3 was because the Z3 was relatively much more affordable.

BMW always do this. They bring out a new car with huge amounts of publicity and then drip feed all the sh*te models afterwards.

It never ceases to amaze me how many fools part with their money for an asthmatic, underpowered piece of junk and seem happy that they have bought the cheapest and slowest model in the range.

That's what I like about the S, 1 model, no options.

Its a good idea, MB bring out a SLK200 so BMW undercut them with a 2.0 Z4. The engine is quite good actually and likes to be thrashed.

AutoTrader have only given those competitors as they are the general comptetitors for the 2.5 and 3.0.

The S has no model options, and I think thats a shame. I really wish there was a lightweight Type R version.

Yes I agree. A friend of mine has a Z4 2.2 debadged (I don't subscribe to some peoples opinions on this board that its ugly, IMO it looks fierce, an automotive school bully - has some great angles). I took the Z4 owner for a spin in the S, she was astounded, also responding that the Z4 isn't a proper sports car like the S - she's happy with the Z4 though - horses for courses.
I'm probably goig to test drive the Alpina soon - I'll report back, its the only Z4 I would consider.

I am sure the new M version will be a weapon! Not sure which engine they are going to put in it... the new M3 400bhp V8 or the current 343bhp 3.2? MB have set their stall out with the 370bhp SLK55!!

Alpina tend to do less sporty cars and more cruisers.

Can't see why anyone would want a Z4 instead of an S2000 ?!?!

A sleek sportscar, against a, well, blunt posing car ?!!?
