A lovely car to drive.

Oddly, feels a bit like a big, heavy Civic VTi. Do they have a form of RWS?

Too big, really, but a very likeable, comfortable car. Like the way the windows auto-close at speed. The V8 is really a nice, if underrated (unreliable apparently!) engine.

Can be troublesome (read expensive) but a good one would make an excellent buy.

A mate had one & I drove it. He chopped it in for an Aston. Think I preferred the Bubble Car.

V8 better than the 850 V12 (as real world quick, less sophisticated engine, cheaper consumables and spares, slightly better mpg)

very difficult to find with anything less than 100K miles

tend to have patchy service history

often clocked - a remarkable number have 80-90K on the clock and no BMW history past 60,000

overpriced (I know you know I'd say that, but they are)

not least because repairs are megabucks

similar to the Porsche 928 in the above respects

I think they feel as big to drive as they look

no sportscar

get a tick from me - if the miles are low, the history checks out and you are happy with 13-17 mpg (lots of people will claim 25mpg)

It's the 'Zero's car of the week post'

I drove an 840 once, thought it was great, but I was just about 21 and still under the impression that a BMW badge was the only one to have.

Basically I've kept the proceeds of the S2000 dry and will have around 12k to spend come the end of the year.....was toying with the idea of perhaps looking at some kind of finance to increase the budget and get a Jag XK but in reality the only car I'd ever consider borrowng money for starts with a 3 and ends with an 8! and I can't afford that level of borrowing

I've narrowed it down to a BMW of sorts as I personally think they make damn good cars despite the prejudice of some

I remember having a good run against an 840 in the Honda and I found it hard work keeping up with it to be honest so they are evidently quite quick in a straightline

A 318........very sensible and shouldn't cost you that much surely

As for 8 series BM's. FWIW, I like them. These and the Z coupe are the only BM's that escape the 'BM' image which is no bad thing.
The 8 series is, however, a phenomenally bad example of space packaging - never has so little usable space been enclose in such a huge car!
