Default Bike Rack - Any Advice much appreciated

Hi all,

After some advice on transporting a MTB on my S2000.

I've done a fair bit of research & although the majority say its a bad idea & should be avoided at all costs, unfortunately if I want to take a bike anywhere I simply have no choice but to transport it on the S.

I've learnt so far that anything that puts pressure / mounts onto the bumper is a no go; which to be fair rules out quite a lot of options.

However on the positive, some have said that the Saris Bones 1 or 2 systems seem to kinda work as they can mounted directly to the boot lid?

Before I take the plunge & commit to a bike (approx weight 14kg) I wondered if anyone could give me some advice as to whether its a simple no go, the Saris Bones or any other options work without damaging the car?

Again my apologies to ask a daft question (bike on an S), but I'm kinda stuck.

Thanks for reading my thread

Always useful to put your location in your profile. Then if you are near to Bedfordshire I would know and could say why not come to my place and try out my Saris Bones cycle rack.

Just a thought

The best way to do this without damaging the car is to use a hitch mount.

I've fitted one of these

but these also have good reviews in the 'states, bit more visible though.

RattyS2k - I'm based in Birmingham PM your location & I'll see how far a trip would work out & thank you for the offer.

earl - That does look interesting but at $300 I don't think I could quite stretch that far.

Be careful with the feet on the Saris Bones rack - I use a Saris Bones 3 and the rubber feet marked my boot lid slightly (though it buffed out fine). Still, some clear vinyl as suggested would've prevented it.

I am near M1Junction 12, about an hour from you. I'm not about till the afternoon of the 19th but as I haven't used the rack for years we can talk money on it if it works.

Saris Bones 2 used here. Bumper is very soft, so not the best for supporting a rack. I put the lower feet on the vertical portion of the boot lid and doubled up on the straps to the front boot edge (Saris supplied a 2nd set for a tenner) to stop it sliding slightly rearward/downward due to strap stretch. I used vinyl patches where the feet sat and the whole thing worked really well.

That stealth hitch is designed for the American S2, does everything line up nicely for our cars? By that I mean the license plate is different.

I'll be attempting to make my own after Christmas but if it goes pear shaped I may opt for that hitch.

Cheers
