It is not only about weight, I would say this is of secondary importance (providing you are not talking about an enormous difference), the bigger the wheel the less suspension/cushioning effect your tyre will have due to smaller sidewalls on the tyres. The difference is enormous and leads to tram lining and makes the suspension and joints work harder. You will take out wheel bearings faster in particular.

Making wheels wider also causes problems as this can lessen the ability of the damper to work effectively. The worst things are wheel spacers, they are fundamentally criminal. I have never seen anything destroy a cars suspension and damping ability so rapidly as these vile devices.

Wheel spacers OR incorrect offsets; a combination of too much rotational mass & increased leverage wrecks bearings, balljoints and especially on roadsters, bodyshells.
