Default Best way to clean an K&N air filter?

I was shocked how filthy my K&N air filter was the other day.
Anyone have any tips on the best way to clean it?

Cheers!

K&N do a cleaner/oil kit. Basically tap out all the crud that has built up then it wash it from inside to out. Left to dry naturally it must then be oiled (filter specific oil). halfords sell it in the ripspeed section next to all the neon washer jets and bake bean tin exhausts

eBay for cheap K&N filter restorer kits.

You can wash them in soapy water as above.
Soak overnight, rinse well and allow to completely dry NEAR a radiator.
Then oil with KN filter oil (red).
Apply a thin bead to each outer fold and allow to stand for a while.
Repeat until evenly 'pink' but dont over do it!

Thanks for the hints and tips!

I've gone down the k&n off ebay to clean it up. I'll put on my OEM air filter whilst my K&N dries out!

Cheers all!

As m1bjr says dont over oil the filter.

Hold the spray 6inches away from the filter and just give it 'one' light coat whilst rotating.

I've personally witnessed one motorbike and another car drop power on a dyno, and over-oiling was to blame.

If over oiled will it damage anything? or just affect performance?

Thanks for the confirmation! Always good to know before hand!

When I used to do it, I used to bath it in petrol for 15 minutes and then blast it all out with compressed air. Then wait another 10 minutes for the petrol to evaporate, oil it and put it back on.

Job done in 30 mins and for pittance really. Only cost is a .25Ltr of petrol and the K&N oil.

If you have a compressor that is how I would do it. Comes out clean as a whistle.
